2026 is Poised to Be Declared the Age of the Amphibian Adventure.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent developer-focused presentation was a delight to watch, my primary conclusion was not the intended one: I am declaring that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.
Exactly five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these leaping protagonists. Considering a band of frogs is termed an army, it appears they are taking over the industry.
The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians
Amphibians have been anything but new to the interactive entertainment. Ever since the era of Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a niche presence. However, their visibility has markedly surged in recent times.
A simple search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an overwhelming flood of results. Granted, some of these are novelty titles, a great many are serious titles centered on frogs.
Charting the Croak Comeback
To understand this phenomenon, I performed a detailed review into the last half-decade of hoppy gaming on Steam. My approach was somewhat arbitrary, counting games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.
The data paint a clear picture: a steady increase from under 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.
This dramatic growth prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The frog's rising status in the public consciousness is also visible elsewhere, like the popularity of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. Yet, the explosion in gaming looks particularly powerful.
The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics
Honestly, this is a movement I can get behind. Frogs possess natural appealing traits for game developers.
- Unique Characters: They are ideally shaped to be designed as memorable characters that frequently end up as a fan favorite in any game.
- Innovative Systems: Their long tongues and sticky tongues facilitate a myriad of innovative control schemes.
Several the announced projects clearly utilize these traits. Examples include the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.
The Leap Into 2026
So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even begun—and the potential for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the largest year yet.
When these games find success—and based on past trends, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we could very well be entering a true croaking cultural moment.
